The word "telephone" was coined by French inventor and journalist Antoine Courrèges, who wrote a series of articles on the invention of the first practical telephone by Alexander Graham Bell. Courrèges used the term "téléphone" in a January 1880 article published in the French newspaper Le Figaro, which translates to English as "far-reach" or "long-distance sound". The term was later adopted into English as "telephone". Bell himself did not directly coin the term, but it stuck as the widely accepted name for the device. The word has since become synonymous with the technology and the act of speaking over distance through a device.
