/ˈwɔːtə/

Definition of undefined

The origin of the word "water" dates back to ancient times. The modern English word "water" comes from the Old English word "wæter", which was derived from the Proto-Germanic word "*watar" and the Proto-Indo-European root "*wódr̥". The same root is also seen in German "Wasser", Dutch "water", Swedish "vatten", and other languages. In Old English, the word "wæter" referred to liquid in general, not just water as we know it today. It wasn't until the 11th century that the word "water" began to be used specifically to refer to the clear liquid we use for drinking and other purposes. Over time, the spelling of the word has evolved to its current form. Despite its ancient roots, the word "water" still retains its original meaning and significance in our modern language.
