/blʌd/

Definition of undefined

The word "blood" has its origins in Old English, where it was spelled "blod" or "blōd". This word is thought to have evolved from the Proto-Germanic word "*blodiz", which is also the source of the Modern German word "Blut" and the Dutch word "bloed". The Proto-Germanic word is believed to have been derived from the Proto-Indo-European root "*bhel-", which meant "to swell" or "to burst". In Old English, the word "blod" referred specifically to the liquid part of the circulatory system, as well as to violence or cruelty. Over time, the meaning of the word expanded to include the concept of lineage or family ties, as in phrases such as "blood relation" or "bloodlines". The word "blood" has undergone relatively little change since Old English, and its modern meaning is closely related to its ancient origins.
