The word "law" has its roots in Old English, dating back to the 5th century. The earliest recorded usage of the word is found in the poem Beowulf, where it is written as "lagu". This Old English term is derived from the Proto-Germanic word "*lagiz", which is also the source of the Modern German word "Lage", meaning "state" or "condition". Throughout history, the meaning of "law" has evolved, from ancient customs and traditions to written codes and regulations. In the 11th century, the word "law" was first used in the Latin phrase "jus legem" (right law), and later, during the 14th century, the English verb "to lay" (to establish or ordain) merged with the concept of "law", leading to the modern English term we use today.
