The word "atoll" originates from the Maldivian language, Dhivehi. In Dhivehi, the word "atholhu" (އަތޮޅު) means "ring-shaped reef" or "circular reef". This refers to the characteristic shape of an atoll, a circular or elliptical coral reef that is formed when a coral island or reef rises above the water level. The Dutch linguist Petrus Camper is often credited with introducing the word "atoll" to European languages in the late 18th century. He took the Dhivehi word "atholhu" and adapted it to "atoll" in his writings about the Maldives and other Pacific islands. Today, the word "atoll" is widely used in geography and marine biology to describe these unique and fascinating underwater formations.
