The term "webcam" was coined in 1991 by two computer scientists, Robert Tesreau and A. J. Goldsmith, who were working on a project called "Cambridge Gramophone Group" at the Cambridge University Computer Laboratory in England. The project aimed to develop a system for transmitting video and audio over the internet in real-time. To test their system, Tesreau and Goldsmith mounted a camera on a doll's head, which they dubbed the "doll cam," and trained it to wander around a desk.
