The word "class" has a rich etymology. The Latin root "classis" referred to a ship's crew, but also to a social or military rank. In the 14th century, the word "class" entered the English language, initially meaning "a division or category" - think of ships being grouped together by crew size or skill. Over time, the concept of social hierarchy influenced the development of the word. The Oxford English Dictionary notes that by the 17th century, "class" could describe a "division of society into ranks" or "a rank or degree in a society." Today, we use the word "class" in various contexts, including education, social stratification, and object classification. Despite its evolution, the word's Latin roots remain evident in its connection to notions of order, grouping, and social distinction.
