The word "racism" was first coined in 1935 by the French sociologist Gustave Le Bon. Le Bon used the term "racisme" in his book "Les Lois Psychologiques de la Survie des Sociétés Raciales" (The Psychological Laws of the Survival of Racial Societies). The word was derived from the French words "race" (meaning "species" or "breed") and "isme" (meaning "-ism" or "theory"). Initially, Le Bon used the term to describe the idea that different racial groups have inherent characteristics that determine their abilities and behaviors. However, the modern connotation of the word "racism" as a belief or ideology that one race is superior to others did not emerge until the mid-20th century. The term gained widespread use in the 1950s and 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, and has since been used worldwide to describe discrimination against individuals or groups based on their race or ethnicity.
