Definition of persecute

The word "persecute" originated during the early Christian era, when a Latin verb persequi (meaning "to follow closely, pursue vigorously") was used to describe the intense hostility and pursuit of Christians by the Roman authorities. This verb was derived from the Latin preposition per (meaning "through") and the verb sequi (meaning "to follow"). As Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire, it faced severe opposition from the authorities, who perceived it as a threat to the established order. Many Christians were arrested, tortured, and executed for their beliefs, and the term "persecution" came to be associated with this intense and often brutal treatment. Over time, the meaning of "persecute" has broadened to include any oppressive or unjust treatment of a person or group based on their beliefs, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or other distinguishing features. Even today, unfortunately, it remains all too common a part of human history, as individuals and governments continue to persecute those who dare to challenge established norms or pursue alternative ideologies.
