The word "odium" comes from the Latin word "odor," meaning "smell" or "stench." In the 19th century, scientists began to recognize that there was a substance in several chemicals that caused a strong, unpleasant smell. This substance, later identified as sulfur dioxide, was initially called "odor" by scientists. However, due to confusion with the use of "odor" to describe a chemical's smell, the word "odium" was proposed as a replacement.
