The term "homophobic" was coined by George Weinberg, an American psychologist, in 1969. At the time, Weinberg was working with the Homosexual Youth Counseling Service in Los Angeles, California. He created the word by combining "homosexual" with the suffix "-phobic," which means "fearing" or "averse to." Weinberg intended to describe a specific type of phobia, or irrational fear, of homosexuality. He wrote that homophobes experienced anxiety, unease, or discomfort around people who were gay or perceived as gay.
