The word "empathy" has its roots in ancient Greek philosophy. The term was first coined by German philosopher and psychologist Robert Vischer in 1873, in his book "Über das optische Formgefühl" ("On the Aesthetic Qualities of Optical Forms"). Vischer borrowed the Greek words "en" (in) and "pathos" (feeling or emotion) to create the term "Einfühlung", which translates to "feeling into". In the early 20th century, psychologists like Edward Titchener and Sigmund Freud adapted and popularized the concept of "empathy" in English-speaking countries. They used the term to describe the ability to vicariously experience and understand another person's emotions or feelings. Over time, the concept has evolved to encompass not only emotional understanding but also social cognition, perspective-taking, and emotional intelligence.
