The word "ellipse" has its origins in ancient Greece. The term comes from the Greek word ἕλλειψις (elleipsis), which means "omission" or "leaving out". This refers to the concept of an ellipse as a curve that is formed by cutting out a region from a larger shape, such as a circle or sphere.
