Definition of doll

The word "doll" has a rich history dating back to the 14th century. The term originated from the Greek word "doulē" (δούλη), meaning "female slave" or "bondservant." This may seem unrelated to the modern concept of a toy doll, but bear with me! During the medieval era, a "doulē" referred specifically to a female servant or maid, often depicted in artwork and literature as a small, attendant figure. Over time, the term evolved to take on a new connotation - a small, decorative figure, often representing a person, especially a woman or child. By the 16th century, "doll" referred to a small, ornamental figure, sometimes with movable limbs, used as a plaything or decorative object. And so, the word "doll" transitioned from a symbol of servitude to a symbol of childhood play and imagination!
