The word "brachiosaurus" comes from the Greek words "brachios," meaning "arm" or "arm-like," and "saurus," meaning "lizard" or "reptile." The name was given to this genus of sauropod dinosaurs by Othniel Charles Marsh, an American paleontologist, in 1877. Marsh used this name because the brachiosaurus had unusually long front legs and arms, with the forelimbs being more elongated than the hindlimbs. This led Marsh to speculate that the brachiosaurus used its long arms to support its body and to graze on high-growing plants. Today, we know that the brachiosaurus was a herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period, around 155 to 145 million years ago.
