The word "semester" has its origins in the Latin language. It comes from the words "semestris" meaning "of half a year" and "seminis" meaning "half". In ancient Rome, the academic year was divided into two parts, known as the "course of the summer" and the "course of the winter". This division was made around 500 BC. The word "semester" was later adopted into Middle English from Old English and Old French. Initially, the word referred to a six-month period, but later it began to be used to describe a two-semester academic year. Today, the word is widely used in many countries to describe the division of the academic year into two periods, usually with a break or recess in between.
