The word "minke" is derived from the Norwegian word "minki," which translates to "little" or "small" whale. This name was first used by Norwegian fishermen in the early 1900s to describe a smaller and more common species of baleen whale that they encountered in their waters. The word "minke" was officially adopted by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in 1972, following the commercial hunting of these whales in the North Atlantic and North Pacific. Prior to that, they were commonly known as "riel whales" or "ginnet whales," based on regional dialects used by fishermen in different areas.
