Definition of mastery

The word "mastery" can be traced back to the Middle English period, around the 13th century. It originated from the Old French word "maistrie," which in turn came from the Latin "magisterium," meaning "teaching" or "authority." In Old French, "maistrie" referred to the teaching or authority of a master, such as a university professor or a craftsman passing on their skills to an apprentice. Over time, the meaning of the word expanded to include the acquisition of a high level of skill or proficiency in a particular area or activity, such as a musical instrument, a sport, or a subject in academics. The word "mastery" went through various forms in Middle English, including "mestraucie" and "maitris," which eventually evolved into the modern English word "mastery." It initially had both a pedagogical and a practical connotation, reflecting the close link between learning and skill acquisition during the Middle Ages.
