Definition of highlighter

The term "highlighter" can be traced back to the 1960s, when the first commercial version of this convenient writing tool was introduced by the Bic Corporation. Prior to this, students and researchers used various methods to mark important text, such as underlining or placing a small translucent tab over the desired section. The Bic "Pen Gorilla" was the first product to specifically address the demand for an easy-to-use, colorful, and versatile marking tool. Its creation was inspired by the development of fluorescent ink, which glowed under black light, creating an effective alternative to traditional underlining methods. However, Bic soon realized that the fluorescent ink was not practical for everyday use since black lights were not commonly available in workplaces and schools. As a result, they switched to ordinary ink that could be used with a low-intensity yellow light, making it easy to identify highlighted sections without the need for special lighting. This new product, called the "Glo-Germ," quickly gained popularity due to its visibility and convenience. Eventually, the name "highlighter" was coined to describe this innovative tool in the late 1970s.
