Definition of fluorescent

fluorescentadjective

huỳnh quang

/fləˈresnt//fləˈresnt/

The word "fluorescent" comes from the Latin word "fluere," meaning "to flow." It was coined in the late 19th century by physicist George Gabriel Stokes, who observed that certain substances emitted light after being exposed to ultraviolet radiation. He termed this phenomenon "fluorescence" because the emitted light appeared to flow from the substance. This was in contrast to "phosphorescence," where light is emitted over a longer period of time.
