The word "ergonomics" has its roots in the Greek words "ergon" (work) and "nomos" (law). It was coined in 1949 by Polish scientist Wojciech Jastrzębowski, who combined the two words to create a new term. Jastrzębowski, an engineer and anthropologist, wanted to describe the study of designing systems that are easy to use and comfortable for humans. He believed that work and human body should be in harmony, and that machines and environments should be designed to accommodate human physical and psychological needs.
