The word "wilderness" originates from the Middle English word "wildernysse," which itself is derived from the Old English word "widlernes." The Old English word is made up of "wid" meaning "wide" or "uncultivated," and "ernes" meaning "land" or "place." The term was originally used to refer to land that was unknown or unexplored, typically as a result of it being uncultivated or unpopulated.
