The word "zoology" is derived from two Greek roots. "Zoon" means animal, and "logia" means the study of or knowledge about. So, zoology, which is the scientific study of animals, can be literally translated to "animal knowledge" or "the study of animals". The term was coined by the French biologist Georges Buffon in the 18th century, who used the phrase "scientia animalium," meaning "knowledge of animals", in his major work "Histoire Naturelle". The term "zoology" was later popularized by the English naturalist Robert Brown and his 1845 textbook "System of Zoology". It has since become the standard term used to refer to the scientific discipline that explores the biology, behavior, and evolution of various animal species.
