/ˌkwiːn ˈbiː//ˌkwiːn ˈbiː/

The term "queen bee" refers to the female bee in a honeybee colony that assumes the role of reproduction. This name originated in the late 1800s, when beekeeper L.L. Langstroth began using glass-fronted hives to study bee behavior. As he observed colonies, he noticed a single, larger bee that appeared to be in charge of the others. This bee, he noticed, engaged in little productive work but rather spent her time being tended to and fed by the other bees. She also laid hundreds of eggs per day, significantly more than the other females in the colony. Langstroth dubbed this bee the "queen bee" based on her royal status in the hive and her extensive reproductive abilities. Today, the term "queen bee" is widely used in beekeeping and related industries to refer to the female bee in charge of reproduction in a honeybee colony.
