The term "ethnocentric" was coined in the late 19th century. The word has its roots in the Greek words "ethnos" meaning "nation" or "people", and "centric" meaning "centered". Initially, the term was used to describe a tendency to view one's own ethnic group or nation as the central or superior reference point, and to consider other cultures or nations as inferior or peripheral. The concept of ethnocentrism was first developed by sociologist William Graham Sumner in his 1906 book "Folkways: A Study of the Sociological Importance of Usages, Manners, Customs, Mores, and Morals". Sumner used the term to describe how people naturally tend to evaluate other cultures and behaviors in relation to their own, often unconsciously assuming their own cultural norms and values to be universal or superior.
