The word "cartoonist" stems from the Dutch word "karton," which means "strong paper." This paper was used to make engraving blocks in the 16th century. Property rights requirements during the late 19th century necessitated more formalized illustrations. In England, prosecution for criminal libel grew both possible and straightforward. Fiction editors wanted to protect the publishing house and its illustrators from potential repercussions of the clumsy or litigious. Therefore, they mandated that artists sign and date their works, officially making them "cartoonists." In short, the term "cartoonist" came to describe a professional illustrator who creates artwork for publication, often working in a humorous or satirical style.
