/ɑːˈkeɪd//ɑːrˈkeɪd/

The word "arcade" has its roots in the French language. Originally, an arcade was a series of arches that provided both a structural support for a building and a covered walkway for people to traverse. In the Middle Ages, buildings with arcades were often used to house merchants and craftsmen, who would display their wares in the covered walkways. In the early 1800s, as cities in Europe and the United States began to develop, arcades became a popular architectural feature in urban areas. They provided a covered space for people to shop, dine, and socialize, protecting them from the elements while also adding ornamental beauty to the buildings they were attached to. The term "arcade" also came to describe the commercial establishments that housed businesses in these covered walkways. In the 1920s and 1930s, "arcades" became popular as nickel arcades, filled with displays of coin-operated amusements, such as pinball machines and video games. These establishments proved to be incredibly popular, giving rise to the modern amusement arcade, which continues to be a popular social and entertainment space today.
