The word "whit" is an old English term used to refer to a festival held on the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday after the third Sunday after Easter. This festival, known as the Whitsun festival, celebrated the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles as described in the Bible's Acts of the Apostles. The word "Whitsun" itself is derived from the Old English "Hwætscunan" which meant "the scattering of holy things." This term was related to the Old English word "hwītan" meaning to "spread" or "scatter," which is also the origin of the modern English word "white" since the festival involved the scattering of holy water and white garments worn by the baptized as a symbol of purity. Over time, the spelling of the word evolved to "Whitsun" or "Whitsunday," which is still used in many European languages, including German and Dutch. However, in modern English, the term "Pentecost" has replaced "Whitsun" in most religious contexts.
