Definition of tourney

The word "tourney" originally came from the Old French word "tornei," which also had its roots in the Latin words "torum" and "tornus," meaning "turn" or "twist." In medieval times, tournaments were popular events that brought together knights and noblemen for athletic and ceremonial activities. The origin of tourneys can be traced back to the 12th century, when they were organized as a way to train knights for war, as well as test their skills and bravery on the battlefield. The term "tourney" specifically referred to the once-frequent competitive events held during the Middle Ages, which involved horse riding, jousting, and archery contests. These tourneys were often accompanied by feasts, dancing, and other festive activities. Over time, tourneys became increasingly elaborate, with multiple rounds or "tilts" taking place, and the winner being declared after a series of these contests. Tourneys were also an important opportunity for the display of chivalric ideals, as well as for knights to showcase their abilities, and sometimes win the favor of a noblewoman or royalty.
