The origin of the word "ringworm" is a misnomer. It doesn't come from a worm that causes the infection, but rather from an outdated understanding of the disease. Ringworm is actually a fungal infection caused by various species of fungi, such as Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton. In the 16th century, physicians believed that the infection was caused by a worm or a small snake, which they called a "worm" (_OLD English: wyrm_). The infection would appear as a circular, ring-like lesion on the skin, which further added to the misconception. The term "ringworm" was first used in the 1600s to describe this infection, despite the lack of worms or snakes involved. Today, we know that ringworm is a fungal infection, not a parasitic one, but the name has stuck!
