Definition of medal

The word "medal" originates from the ancient Greek word "medalion," which meant a small object, typically a sculpture or engraving, used as an amulet or talisman. The term was used to describe decorative objects that were shaped like round or oval discs. In ancient Greece, medals were often used as prizes in athletic and artistic competitions. The medals would feature an image of the athlete or artwork on one side and a representation of the event or competition on the other side. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the use of medals declined, and they didn't become popular again until the Renaissance. During this time, medals were again used to commemorate historical or important events, and they were often given as gifts to dignitaries or honored individuals. In the mid-19th century, the modern concept of medals as awards for achievement was established. The first modern Olympic medals, introduced in 1896, featured an image of the Olympic goddess Nike on the front and a design representing the host country on the reverse. Today, medals are still used to recognize outstanding achievements, both in athletic competitions and other areas of life, such as academics, community service, and military service.
