Definition of lemon

The word "lemon" has a fascinating origins. It comes from the Arabic word "limān" (ليمون), which refers to the fruit. The Arabic term is derived from the Sanskrit word "nimbula" (निम्बूल), meaning "sour," possibly due to the fruit's sour taste. The Arab conqueros of Persia (modern-day Iran) brought citrus fruits, including the lemon, to the Mediterranean region. The word "lemon" was later adopted into Middle English from Old French "limon," which in turn came from the Arabic "limān." The term "lemon" has been used in the English language since the 14th century. Prior to that, the fruit was referred to as "citron" or "limonier."
