The word "laser" is an acronym that stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation." The term was coined in 1957 by Gordon Gould, an American physicist, who used it in a patent application for a device that produced a concentrated beam of light. The word "laser" was officially recognized by the American English dictionary Merriam-Webster in 1969. Prior to Gould's invention, the concept of amplifying light by stimulated emission had been discussed by Albert Einstein in 1917 and later by Alexander Lukirsky in 1933. However, Gould is credited with popularizing the term and developing the first practical laser device.
