Definition of halftone

halftonenoun

Halftone

/ˈhɑːftəʊn//ˈhæftəʊn/

"Halftone" is a combination of two words: "half" and "tone." It originated in the late 19th century, during the development of printing techniques. Before halftones, images could only be printed in black and white, using solid blocks of ink. Halftone technology allowed for the reproduction of shades of grey by using tiny dots of varying sizes, which gave the illusion of continuous tones. The term "halftone" refers to the fact that these dots are printed at half the size of the original image, creating a more detailed and realistic representation.
