Definition of antenna

The word "antenna" originates from the Latin word "antennae," meaning "barts." In the 17th century, anatomists used this term to describe the feathery structures that grew from the ears of deer and other animals, which were thought to aid in their sense of smell. Later, astronomers began to use the term to describe the feathery or hair-like structures on the heads of insects, which they believed helped them sense their surroundings. In the late 19th century, the term was adapted to describe the metal rods or wires used to receive radio signals, which were thought to be similar to the antenna-like structures found in nature. Today, the word "antenna" is used to describe a wide range of devices that transmit or receive electromagnetic signals, from radio antennas to satellite dishes.
