Definition of spare tyre

spare tyrenoun

lốp dự phòng

/ˌspeə ˈtaɪə(r)//ˌsper ˈtaɪər/

The term "spare tyre" originated in the early 20th century when automobiles became more common. Prior to that, cars were a rare sight, and repair services were not easily available. Thus, if a tyre (or tire, as it is called in some parts of the world) were to go puncture, it could leave the driver stranded in the middle of nowhere. To combat this, car manufacturers started including an extra, smaller tyre as part of the standard equipment. This tyre was designed to be temporarily mounted on the wheel in the event of a puncture or other tyre issues, allowing the vehicle to be driven to a nearby garage or safe location to replace the damaged tyre. The term "spare tyre" was coined to describe this additional tyre, which is meant to spare the driver the inconvenience and danger of being stranded with a flat tyre.
