Definition of renaissance

The word "Renaissance" has its roots in French and Latin. It is derived from the French word "revenue," meaning "rebirth" or "reawakening." This word was coined in the 16th century to describe the cultural and intellectual revival that took place in Europe during that time. The term is thought to have been popularized by French philosopher and historian Jules Michelet, who used it in his 1855 book "Le Renouveau de la monde ancien" (The Rebirth of the Ancient World). Michele believed that European society was experiencing a rebirth of classical knowledge and values. The Latin roots of the word are "renasci," meaning "to be reborn," and "renata," meaning "renewed."
