The word "relative" comes from the Latin words "relatus" and "relativus," meaning "brought back" or "carried back." In the 14th century, the term began to be used in English to describe family members who are not immediate parents, children, or siblings, such as aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. Initially, "relative" referred primarily to those blood relatives who were not immediate family members.
