The word "paraffin" originates from the Latin words "parum" meaning "little" and "affinis" meaning "related to". This refers to the fact that paraffin is a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons that are similar to, but distinct from, asphalt, which was known to scientists in the 19th century. In the mid-19th century, English chemist Michael Faraday discovered a waxy, odourless, and colourless substance that he called "paraffin wax". This was later found to be a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons, specifically alkane molecules. The term "paraffin" was coined to describe this new class of chemicals, which were distinct from the unsaturated hydrocarbons found in asphalt.
