Definition of nirvana

The word "nirvana" originates from the ancient Sanskrit language and has its roots in Buddhist philosophy. In its literal form, it can be translated as "extinction" or "blowing out" - a reference to the extinguishing of the "flames" of desire, ignorance, and suffering that bind a person to the cycle of birth and rebirth (or samsara). The concept of nirvana is central to Buddhism and is often depicted as a state of perfect peace, happiness, and liberation from suffering.
