The Old English word "duppian" (meaning "to dip, immerse") is the origin of the modern English word "dip". This verb, in turn, has given rise to the prepositional phrase "dip into", meaning "to begin to use a portion of (a container, substance, etc.) by immersing a part of oneself or an implement into it". The phrase became popular in the 15th century, as the consumption of dips, such as sauces, pickles, and condiments, increased in Europe due to the spread of international trade and the development of new food preservation methods. Over time, "dip into" has evolved to encompass a wide range of meanings, including "to begin reading, watching, or listening to (a book, movie, or song)", "to begin exploring or experimenting with (a new idea, place, or interest)", and "to begin a new task or project by diving into it with enthusiasm and focus".
