The word "denial" stems from the Latin word "negare," meaning "to deny." It evolved through Old French "denier" to its current English form. The concept of denial, however, predates language itself, existing as a fundamental human psychological defense mechanism. Denial allows us to avoid facing unpleasant truths by blocking them out of our conscious awareness. While "denial" has a negative connotation in modern usage, it is not inherently bad.
