Definition of civil war

The term "civil war" derives from the Latin term "bellum civile," meaning "civil strife" or "civil disorder." The concept of a civil war, however, can be traced back to ancient times, where it referred to internal conflicts within a state, as opposed to external wars with foreign enemies. In ancient Greece, the term "stasis" denoted civil discord or rebellion, while in Rome, "bellum civile" was used during the conflict between Caesar's supporters and the Senate in 49-45 BC. The term gained wider usage in the 16th and 17th centuries as the concept of a nation-state crystallized and civil wars became more common throughout Europe. In its modern form, "civil war" describes a conflict between factions within a sovereign state, specifically when those factions are not able to resolve their differences through peaceful means. Such conflicts are often marked by violence, sabotage, assassination, and other forms of armed struggle, and can escalate to involve military intervention from other countries or international organizations. The term "civil war" carries significant historical, social, and political weight, evoking images of destruction, suffering, and often relief efforts to mitigate the fallout.
