The word "cinema" originates from the Greek word "kinema," meaning "movement," and the French suffix "-ma," used to form nouns. In 1895, French inventor Louis Le Prince coined the term "cinématographe" to describe his motion picture device. Later, in 1907, the French film theorist and critic Louis Lumière used the term "cinéma" to describe the art of filmmaking. The term gained popularity and was eventually adopted by the rest of the world. In 1927, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially recognized "cinema" as the preferred term for the art form.
