Definition of buttonhole

/ˈbʌtnhəʊl//ˈbʌtnhəʊl/

In early times, buttons were simply looped through holes in fabric, and the term "buttonhole" described the process of creating these holes. Over time, the term evolved to also refer to the small opening or slit in a garment, typically at the top of a cuff or near the collar, where a button is inserted. Today, the word "buttonhole" is commonly used in sewing, clothing construction, and even in sports (as in the buttonhole view in golf).
