Definition of balcony

The word "balcony" originated from the French word "balcon" which means "high place" or "outledge" in Old Occitan. The Roman architect Vitruvius coined the term "exhedra" which referred to projections outside of buildings that served as social spaces. These projections were similar to present-day balconies, except that they had only a partial floor and were typically open to the elements. The use of the term "balcony" emerged during the Italian Renaissance, when ornate, enclosed projections became more popular. The first known use of the word "balcony" in English was in the mid-14th century, when it appeared in William Langland's Middle English poem, "Piers Plowman." In Renaissance Italy, balconies were often adorned with ornate sculptures or reliefs, depicting scenes from mythology or religious stories. These sculptures were meant to symbolize the importance of the occupant of the balcony, as well as to add visual interest to the exterior of the building. By the 16th century, balconies had become a standard feature in Italian architecture, and their popularity spread throughout Europe. They were used not only for aesthetic purposes, but also for practical reasons, such as providing additional living space or serving as a place to dry clothing.
