Definition of artery

The word "artery" comes from the Latin word "artēria", which was derived from the Greek word "ἀρθ Peer" or "arteriōn Imperishable". According to Berthelot, the Greek philosopher Galen (129-216 AD) was the first to use the term "arteriōn" to describe blood vessels, which he thought were imperishable or eternal. The Latinized version of the word, "artēria", was later adopted into Middle English as "arterey" or "artere", and eventually evolved into the modern English spelling "artery". Despite the name's origin in ancient Greek and Latin, the concept of blood vessels and their function in the circulatory system has undergone significant changes and refinements through the centuries.
