1. After articles

There is always a noun after the article. Articles include: a, an, the.

✎ NOTE: This noun may not necessarily stand immediately after the article but may stand a few words away.

In between the article and the noun will be an adjective to modify that noun.

For example:

  • The girl was from another city. = That girl is from another city.
    → After the article the is a noun girl
  • I meta beautiful girl at the bus stop. = I met a beautiful girl at the bus stop.
    → After the article a is a noun girl, in between them are adjectives beautiful

2. After possessive words

There is always a noun after the possessive word. Possessive words include: my, your, his, her, its, our, their, genitive form.

✎ NOTE: This noun may not necessarily come immediately after the possessive adjective, but may come a few words away.

Between the possessive adjective and the noun will be the adjective that modifies the noun.

  • The train's departure was delayed because of the rain. = The departure of the train was delayed because of rain.
    → After the possessive case the train's is a noun departure
  • This is my new computer. = This is my new computer.
    → After possessive adjectives my is a noun computer, in between them are adjectives new

3. After determiners

 After determiners such as this, that, these, those, each, every, both, no, some, any, few, a few, little, a little, ...there is always a noun.

✎ NOTE: This noun may not need to stand immediately after the determiner but can stand a few words away.

 In between the determiner and the noun will be an adjective to modify the noun.

  • It is important to do some research. = Doing research is important.
    → After determiner some is a noun research
  • That young woman helped me carry my bag. = That young woman helped me carry my bag.
     After determiner that is a noun woman, in between them are adjectives young

However, we should also be careful because there are pronouns that have the same form as determiners, but their grammatical functions are different.

Specifically, after the determiner, there must be a noun phrase, and the pronoun must always stand alone, there must not be a noun phrase after the pronoun:

  • Demonstrative adjectives: These new pencils are good. = These new pencils are good.
     After demonstrative adjectives these has noun phrase new pencils
  • Subject: These are good. = These are good.
     After demonstrative pronouns these no noun
