Prepositions

1. Introduction

This is a small game to practice prepositions in English. Prepositions are generally basic and sound at a fairly low level.

A preposition is a word or phrase that shows the relationship between two things in a sentence. For example, the sentence "The book is on the shelf" contains 2 objects (the book and the bookshelf) and the preposition 'on' indicates the relationship between them. Other examples of prepositions include 'under', 'by', 'with', 'without', 'because of'. In this game, all the prepositions used are prepositions of place which means they describe the location of objects in relation to other objects.

The purpose of this game is to give students the opportunity to practice prepositions in a way that has a clear visual context. And in an interactive way with instant feedback. Students can actively move objects and see them positioned according to a preposition; Hopefully through that, students can understand more specifically about prepositions and their meanings. Every time students read and understand a preposition and then move the object accordingly, they are re-enforcing the meaning in the actual context.

To play the game, students simply read the sentence and then move the matching object to the correct position. Objects can be moved with the mouse or by touching with a mobile device. A total of 9 scenes are used in this game: front room, bathroom, bedroom, fridge, park, cafe, classroom, TV and office. They are chosen in the hope that they provide real context and are relevant to situations where students can actually hear and use prepositions in their daily lives. The prepositions used in this game include: in, on, under, above, next to, right, left, behind, in front of and between. For each of the 9 scenes, there are 12 objects that must be positioned correctly; When this has been done, students move on to the next scene. The scenes are getting more and more difficult both in terms of language and time allowed.

If you think the game is too fast or too difficult for your students' English level, you can play it in slow mode. To play slowly, simply click slow on the title screen or change the settings by clicking the in-game button.
