Jobs

1. Introduction

This is a game to learn vocabulary about work in English. The target language is job titles and a functional description of a job. The target audience is ESL learners who want to practice and review work-related language.

This game has 3 parts. The first part is a simple preview screen in which you view 8 work vocab images. You can hover your mouse over each item to see the job title that matches each image. And you can click on the image to hear the job title being said. This section also serves as the content selection screen - you can use the arrows to select a group of 8 tasks that you want to practice on. The second part is a matching game where you are presented with 8 pictures and 8 words. You must move the pictures or words so that they fit together exactly. In the 3rd section, you will see an image and text options below. You have to look at the picture and try to guess which job it corresponds to. Once you guess right, you will see another picture that more clearly shows what the job does. Then you have to click on the text to make a basic sentence about the job.

There are 104 jobs in total. These are all possible jobs that I can think of to show visually. There is a bit of overlap, e.g. cleaners and janitors are quite similar. But overall, I think each job is pretty well defined. The 104 jobs are divided into 13 groups by difficulty. The jobs are easier, more common at the start, and the jobs are less common at the end. The last group is mostly engineer types - I think it's best to group all the engineering jobs together so they can be collated more easily.
